Do you like to negotiate? Many women don’t.  This panel addresses why some women don’t like to negotiate and offers ideas on finding your own style and enjoying the process.  Three experienced panelists will provide their best tips on how to succeed in negotiating.

Meet the Panelists:

Stephanie Amend is the CEO and Founding Principal of Arrowhead Solutions, LLC, a government contracting services and consulting company. Stephanie's background includes time as a Contract Negotiator for the US Air Force and Contract Manager for both large and small businesses. Trained in negotiations, and utilizing these skills to the benefit of Arrowhead's clients, Stephanie regularly negotiates such things as contract terms, pricing, and teaming on behalf of clients.

Betsey Martens is the Executive Director of Boulder Housing Partners, a Boulder-based organization committed to creating quality affordable housing in a community setting that supports residents’ efforts to realize success in their lives. In 1999, in her role as acting-Executive Director, she negotiated a leadership restructure in which she and Cindy Brown shared power as co-executive directors. Cindy left the organization in 2009 and Betsey happily employs many lessons learned from Cindy, most of them practiced on her three teenagers. Betsey also gets lots of practice in her new role as the recently elected President of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).  NAHRO is the nation’s oldest and largest organization of professionals working in the housing and community development field.

Joan Norman is a partner at Buchholz, McDowell, and Norman.  She is past president of the Boulder County and Colorado Bar Associations. She says: I am an attorney practicing almost exclusively in family law/divorce.  I negotiate to some degree about something on most days; unless I am in court (then we are done negotiating).  Negotiation is an important part of my practice.  If I can get a good result for my client without having to go to court, it reduces my fees and reduces stress for my client.

Meet the Moderators:

Cindy Brown is the former Co-Executive Director for Boulder Housing Partners, where she negotiated with developers, bankers, lawyers, funders, and regulators.  She is now working as a writer on the outdoors and also on a new book called The Girl’s Guide to Swagger.

Susan Schultz is a BPW Board member and has been negotiating contracts for over 12 years. She is currently employed with the Legal Department at The Vail Corporation, which owns and operates six ski resorts in Colorado and Lake Tahoe and operates luxury resorts and spas throughout the United States, Caribbean and Latin America. Susan also is the Vice President of the Colorado Junior Karting Club and, among other things, is responsible for negotiating contracts between race track owners and the club.
