Who's New:
Featured Member- Megan Shellman
A Colorado native, Megan holds a large amount of affinity for this state and all it has to offer: skiing, festivals, hiking, snowshoeing, canoeing, camping... Daughter to an artist, Marikay Shellman, and a festival promoter, Fred Shellman – Megan is a person of unique and creative character.
As Operations Manager for Access Marketing and Events, Megan brings more than a decade of experience in a wide variety of disciplines. Formerly employed in the Music Industry, she worked with bands on an international level. An advertising consultant for a daily paper in Boulder, Colorado, Megan consistently grew her client base. And as the general manager of an interior design and home furnishings store, she directed the implementation of their first computerized sale system, supervised employees and executed a multi-media marketing plan.
Now, as the Access Marketing Operations Manager, Megan is a “Jill of All Trades”. She is the Project Manager for the Creative Department. With a fondness for numbers and formulas, she heads-up the Finance & Contract Department – invoices, contracts, collections, statements and financial reports. At events, Megan can be seen holstered with both a phone and radio, all-the-while assisting with operations to help ensure that the entire conference experience exceeds expectations. In addition, since no one else was up to the task, Megan is the Human Relations Director!
She has gladly found some time in her day to devote to BPW and feels it is a blessing to finally find a group of women with similar backgrounds, jobs and lifestyles.
Carolyn Romero's Acceptance Speech
“Lying, thinking - Last night
How to find my soul of a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don’t believe I’m wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out there alone.”
This first verse from Maya Angelou’s poem “Alone” speaks to the heart of our celebration tonight. Nobody, but nobody can make it out there alone.
I am humbled by this honor of being named Boulder BPW's Member of the Year. My passion for BPW started 20 years ago. I was an over achieving accountant striving to become one of the few female partners at an international public accounting firm. One of my clients stopped me one day with two comments that became the basis for my experience in BPW and changed my life.
First – you didn't make it this far on your own. Someone helped pry open the doors. It is up to you to reach out and help the next person succeed.
Second – Come be a part of an organization that doesn't sit back and just complain. They take action to make change happen!
I have lived by these two goals – Reach out and help the next person succeed and be willing to take action to make change happen – for the past 20 years.
The selection committee acknowledged my work with the Reality Store. It is through your support and encouragement that I started the Reality Store for young girls. Some of you were with me when we hosted that first program in the church gym here is Boulder. What a legacy we started. 5 years later, we have touched the lives of over 1,000 young women – helping them understand not only that they can choose how they live, but that their career opportunities are boundless. Thank you for making the journey with me and helping to empower the next generation of women.
Since tonight’s theme is about empowering women to succeed, I want to share with you some secrets of success by telling with you a story based on the book: When the Last Acorn is Found by Deborah Latske:
There is a legend told by a wise old woman who lives near the forest’s edge. Each time she is asked to tell the story, she removes an acorn from her pocket, folds it gently in the palm of her hand and begins.
Some will believe what I tell you is fact and some will believe it is fiction. It is up to you to decide what you believe, and what you believe will come true.
Everyone is born with a special talent which is recognized, nurtured and celebrated. Even the youngest share the gift of teaching the elders a renewed appreciation of fun, wonder and adventure. Everyone contributes and everyone is acknowledged for their contribution.
Each of these acorns contributes to your success:
• It is up to you to decide what you believe, and what you believe will become your truth.
• Love yourself.…for it makes all things possible.
• Love others….and you will learn to give.
• Allow others to love you…and you will learn to receive.
• Believe in yourself….for what you truly believe you will achieve.
• Make fun and laughter a priority…Life is to be enjoyed.
• Seek out opportunities and possibilities….life is an adventure.
• Take risks and face fears….Wonderful things await you in the unknown.
• Make choices wisely and with love….The quality of your life depends on it.
And finally -
• Share the gift of who you are….It’s why you came to be.
Thank you to all new and renewing Boulder BPW members
